Job purpose

Design, develop and implement new products (NPI/NPD). Support existing product improvements and cost down (VA/VE) initiatives.

Main responsibilities/job accountabilities

  • Establish detailed Product Specifications, including critical Fit & Functional performance, customer, industry and legal requirements.
  • Provide reliable, cost effective designs that maintain compliance to Product Specification.
  • Coordinate prototype procurement / manufacture for concept design validation.
  • Ensure design validation (inc. tolerance analysis, calculation, FEA as required) is achieved and documented.
  • Develop and maintain Design FMEA reports from concept to launch.
  • Produce 3D models and 2D drawings and other technical documentation.
  • Coordinate regular cross-functional design and DFM reviews, documenting actions / minutes.
  • Check and approve designs (3D and 2D), calculations and reports.
  • Prepare and amend costed BOMs through all project phases.
  • Provide technical support for suppliers, toolmakers, product certification and approval.
  • Ensure product verification testing and fit & functional performance is maintained and documented.
  • Ensure all design actions / targets are met or recovery plans achieved.
  • Ensure accuracy of product data with MRP business system (BOMs, routings, weights etc).
  • Provide technical expertise for Design Support, new business enquiries and Engineering Change process.

  • Deliver robust products to agreed timescale, quality and budget.
  • Maintain compliance to Product Specifications throughout product life.
  • Right first-time product design, data input and system accuracy.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).

Essential Experience

  • Design engineering role within dynamic manufacturing organisation.
  • Track record of successful new product development and introduction.
  • Design experience within a regulated industry, product type testing / certification. (DESIRABLE)

Essential aptitudes and knowledge

  • Hands-on, practical engineering skill (i.e. prototype building, testing).
  • Proven 3D and 2D capability (AutoCad inventor or equivalent).
  • Attention to detail.
  • Microsoft Office.
  • Preparation and amendment of costed BOM’s and routings. (Desirable)

Essential systems knowledge:

  • NPI Gateway process.
  • Design FMEA.
  • Design For Manufacture / Assembly.
  • MRP systems. (desirable)
  • Quality Systems, ISO-90001 / ISO-14001. (desirable)

Essential skills and competencies :

  • Open, honest and collaborative approach.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Good understanding and application of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Enthusiasm for product development and design engineering.
  • Design of polymers / injection moulded parts and assemblies. (desirable)
