Why Engineering is a Career Full of Opportunity for Women

Why Engineering is a Career Full of Opportunity for Women | Winberry | Permanent recruitment in Newport | Fixed-term hiring across Cardiff | UK-wide staffing solutions from Bristol

International Women in Engineering Day is a chance to celebrate the incredible women shaping the engineering industry today, while also reflecting on how much potential still exists to encourage more women into the sector.

For Winberry's Managing Consultant, Angharad Isaac, who has spent the last 15 years placing engineering professionals across Wales and the South West of England, the day carries meaning.

“Engineering remains a predominantly male dominated industry, but throughout my career I've had the privilege of working with some incredibly talented women across disciplines including quality, continuous improvement, process engineering, design, manufacturing and environmental sciences.”

Despite ongoing gender imbalance, women are already making a significant impact across engineering — often in highly technical, specialist, and problem-solving roles that directly shape industries and communities.

One placement that stands out for Ang was a Hydrogeologist she supported in Pembrokeshire.

“She was one of the most interesting professionals I've ever worked with, combining scientific expertise with engineering principles to solve real-world environmental challenges.”

It’s examples like this that highlight the breadth of opportunity within engineering. Far from being a narrow or traditional career path, engineering spans environmental science, sustainability, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, design, and innovation.

Why engineering is a strong career choice for women

Engineering offers:

  • Strong long-term career progression
  • High demand across multiple industries
  • Opportunities to solve real-world problems
  • A wide range of specialisms beyond traditional perceptions
  • The chance to contribute to sustainability and innovation

Yet despite this, women remain underrepresented across much of the sector.

Ang believes that change starts with visibility and opportunity.

“As a recruiter, one of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping talented people find opportunities where they can thrive. And whilst we've seen positive progress, I'd love to see more young women choosing engineering as a career path in the future.”
